Four Different Pie Iron Sandwich Recipes

  1. Pie Iron Monte Cristo:

Ingredients: 

  • 2 slices of bread
  • 2 slices of ham
  • 2 slices of turkey
  • 2 slices of cheddar cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp milk
  • Powdered sugar (to serve, optional)

Method: 

  1. Mix together the egg and milk using a fork until thoroughly combined and smooth.
  2. Dip each piece of bread in the egg-milk mixture, making sure each piece is fully coated.
  3. Place one slice of bread in your pie iron, then layer the meat and cheese on top, finish with the second piece of bread.
  4. Cook for approximately 5 minutes on each side or until the bread is toasted.
  5. Sprinkle with a little powdered sugar to serve.

 

  1. Egg and Bacon Breakfast Sandwich

Ingredients: 

  • 1 egg
  • 2 cheese slices
  • 2 slices of bread
  • 2 rashers of bacon
  • Selection of pre-cooked veggies (optional)

Method: 

  1. Fry the bacon on a pan over your campfire (or pre-cook at home).
  2. Place one egg on each side of the pie iron, add butter and mix together, then cook until the eggs are firm.
  3. Once the bacon and eggs are ready, place them on one slice of the bread, add the cheese and any extra veggies, then close the sandwich.
  4. Pop the sandwich into the pie iron and cook for a few minutes on each side to lightly toast the bread.

 

  1. Pizza Pie Iron Sandwich

Ingredients: 

  • 2 slices of bread
  • 2 tbsp of tomato pizza sauce
  • A handful of pepperoni, sliced
  • Handful mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • Your other favorite pizza toppings

Method:

  1. Place 1 tbsp of tomato pizza sauce on each slice of bread. Spread the sauce evenly over the bread, leaving a little space around the edges.
  2. Top one slice of bread with pepperoni, mozzarella cheese, and any other ingredients you like.
  3. Close the sandwich by putting the bread together (tomato sides facing each other), then place in the pie iron.
  4. Cook over the fire for around 5 minutes on each side or until the bread is toasted and the cheese has melted.

Okay, this recipe actually makes 4 s’mores… But, let’s face it, who’s only eating one of these?!

 

Pie Iron Sandwich Recipe

Ingredients: 

  • 4 graham crackers (plus extra crumbs)
  • 2 piae crusts, refrigerated
  • 2 cups chocolate chips
  • 8 large marshmallows
  • 2 jars of marshmallow crème
  • Butter

Method:

  1. Preheat your pie irons and crush the graham crackers in a bowl.
  2. Lay out the pie crusts on a clean surface and cut them into eight squares roughly the same size as your pie irons.
  3. Butter each piece of pie crust on one side, then sprinkle the crushed crackers over four of the squares.
  4. Divide the chocolate chips evenly between the four pie squares that have crushed crackers on them.
  5. On the other four pie crusts, spread over the marshmallow crème, and top with two marshmallows per square.
  6. Carefully lay the marshmallow pie crusts on top of the cracker-chocolate crusts and gently pinch the sides together.
  7. Take your pie irons off the heat, carefully butter the sides, and then sprinkle some crushed cracker crumbs over.
  8. Place your first s’more into the pie iron and close it, trimming off any overhanging crust.
  9. Cook for 5-7 minutes on each side until the crust turns golden brown.
  10. Serve hot and melty!

Notes

These are some of my all-time favorite campfire cooking lunches, and frankly, I just don’t think it gets any better than a delicious toasted sandwich in the great outdoors!

That said, some of these tasty treats are so good, the kids won’t let me save them for just camping, and I regularly find myself firing up the grill for a campfire treat, whatever the weather!
